CIRCULAR INNOVATION COHORT

Brought to you by Upaya Social Ventures, Global Business Inroads, and rePurpose Global, the nine-month long Dignified Jobs Accelerator brings deep expertise, global networks, and access to finance to early-stage entrepreneurs in the plastics, and textiles & fashion waste management sector. This program will be conducted in two phases: Level 1 will be a three-month virtual program for 60 businesses and Level 2 will be a six-month tailored, hands-on, capacity building program for 10 businesses.

This program is supported by Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) at the Aspen Institute and IKEA Foundation under the Investment Innovation Fund designed to improve access to finance for waste and circularity enterprises in India and Kenya.

About The Program

The waste management sector is expected to be a $35.87 billion opportunity by 2028. However, in the current scenario, increasing levels of mismanaged waste and lack of adequate resources, scalable infrastructure and regulations, and relevant or innovative solutions to manage waste is an increasing threat to the waste crisis. Additionally, there is a huge dependency of this sector on the informal economy who face tremendous health, economic, and social challenges. Businesses in waste & circularity have the potential to reimagine the sector through innovation and one that is based on social inclusion.

The Dignified Jobs Accelerator under the Circular Innovation Cohort will bring together a passionate cohort of impact entrepreneurs who are building innovations and creating jobs in the waste management and circularity sector. Specifically focused on plastics, and textiles & fashion value chain, this program is designed to support businesses that work closely with sanitation workers or rural communities, the first-mile in the waste management value chain.

About The Circular Innovation Cohort

With a focus on plastics, and textiles & fashion waste management value chains, we are looking for circular innovations across the following categories:

  • waste management including collection, segregation, and sorting where advanced technologies and community-based initiatives ensure that materials are properly categorized and prepared for recycling or repurposing

  • processing of waste to value creation such as reusing, upcycling or downcycling, and transforming discarded plastics and textiles into new products, raw materials, or energy sources, thereby reducing reliance on virgin resources and minimizing waste

  • developing sustainable alternatives to plastic and other waste materials like food packaging, single-use plastics, and/or creating biodegradable textiles

These innovations have the potential to create new revenue streams, enhance the efficiency of supply chains, and open up new markets, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient economy.

  • The Dignified Jobs Accelerator grew out of Upaya’s experience making impact-first investments in the “missing middle.” We know that attracting the right kind of capital to grow both impact and financial success could be challenging for early-stage businesses.

Our accelerator takes a comprehensive approach to building investment-readiness capacity for each member of the cohort, going beyond pitch decks and investor connections to truly build a business model and narrative that is attractive to investors. We help entrepreneurs scale their businesses as well as their impact, using our unique insights and network.

  • Circular innovation in plastics, and textiles & fashion waste management refers to solutions that aim to eliminate waste and pollution. These solutions focus on shifting from a linear economy (where products are made, used, and discarded) to a circular economy (where products are reused, repaired, and recycled).

  • The World Bank defines extreme poverty as living on under USD $1.90 per day. We partner with companies creating jobs that are targeted at this extremely poor population. While extreme poverty looks different around the country and the world, what people living in these conditions have in common is their dire economic vulnerability.
